When I rediscovered this as an adult (at a “classic” movie screening at a theater around 2004) I was really surprised how good it was. My childhood experience with Rocky included seeing III, IV and V in the theater, but this was nothing like those. Despite being nostalgic about Mr. T and “the Russian,” the original is the only one that I actually own and rewatch periodically.
Some pertinent details that I don’t think were mentioned in the podcast: nominated for 10 Oscars and won 3 including Picture and Director. Stallone was nominated for original screenplay and actor. The director Avildsen also directed the Karate Kid movies which were mentioned a few times in the podcast. The only other Rocky movie he did was V, so he has that ignominious distinction. Stallone directed all the others.
